56d8881d7a1183e685f019302f2a2608 David Lynch, Sparklehorse, and Danger Mouse: Dark Night Of The Soul
If you hadn’t already heard, Danger Mouse has just put out a new record.

Well, not entirely: Danger Mouse has finished a collaborative album with Sparklehorse, aided by the photographic accompaniment of acclaimed director David Lynch and co-produced and co-written along with a gaggle of musical guests, including Iggy Pop, Julian Casablancas of The Strokes, Suzanne Vega, Nina Persson, and The Flaming Lips–and that’s only about a third of the star power wattage.

With the massiveness of this release (called Dark Night Of The Soul), it seems only too obvious then that a massive controversy should follow. According to the project’s main website, Danger House is in the midst of a dispute with EMI. As a result, the album is temporarily (permanently?) stalled.

Instead, Danger Mouse is releasing a limited edition, 100-page spread of Lynch’s photographs accompanying the release, along with a blank CD-R labeled “For legal reasons, enclosed CD-R contains no music. Use it as you will.” The album is currently hosted at various torrent websites, along with a full stream on NPR that has no set time of removal.

Sneaky devil, though it does entertain further thought regarding the age of digital downloads, pirating music, and the demise of the traditional industry. Who knows what will come of this? Click “Read More…” to see the full tracklist.

1ebf7470c73a52330e5969c99d3b2f6a A Night In Peaches: May 16 In NYC (Concert Review)
Last night, I went to Webster Hall to go and receive the Teaches from the inimitable Peaches. And, much to my surprise, I was neither punched in the face nor violated by a fat hooker. I did, however, have a complete blast. And I got to meet Anthony (TastesLikeCaramel) and Hannah (SheenaBeaston)! Total douches, truly…I can’t even begin to explain how awful they were.

KIDDING! They’re fantastic. Can’t wait to go see some more shows with those crazy kids. Plus, they’re much cooler than I–they even got to meet her afterwards!

The show began a bit haphazardly: First, Drums of Death (originally scheduled to begin at icon cool A Night In Peaches: May 16 In NYC (Concert Review) were stuck at the airport, thus missing their opening performance entirely. Then came the pre-Peaches event: The Naked Cowgirl, a woman of advanced years who sang cheap, sexual ditties while stripping down bare and jumping about. Generally, I was over it (read: nauseated) after the third song–until she lit her nipples on fire. That was kind of fun.

But then, out came Peaches…and suddenly everything turned awesome. The Queen of Nasty rocked out to over twenty four tracks (!), armed with a wealth of tricks up her hairy sleeves for the night’s events: Among them, climbing up into the balcony to scream out a slightly rockier rendition of my personal favorite, “Operate,” a green laser beam shot into the disco ball hanging above for “More,” hairy back-up dancers for “Talk To Me,” six or seven costume changes between songs, and a self-proclaimed blinking “pussy light” for the final few numbers including “Fuck The Pain Away.”

Performance wise, the singer proved completely capable of tackling her hits on pitch and then some…I’m convinced Peaches could be a full-fledged singer after hearing her knock out the riskier singing numbers “I Feel Cream,” “Lose You,” and “Lovertits.”

One major set and two encores later, Peaches had left the stage. Such a performer! Loved, loved it.

Now if only I could feel my legs…

EDIT: Check out more pictures over at BrooklynVegan (including a brief review cameo by yours truly…I’m quite the big deal.)

Quote of the night:
Gay boy to boyfriend: (overheard while leaving the venue) “Can you believe people would pay $180 to see Britney when they can come and see THIS for basically free?!”

Alright, so I’ve been wavering on this one for a while.

After mysteriously receiving their single (“Would You Like That?”) in my inbox anonymously two weeks ago, I’ve finally come to the sobering realization: Yes, yes I think I would like that.

This is No Means Yes, a girl group on the brink of debut in America. (!)

99686d0813faaff32d10b50c635914e6 Introduucing...No Means Yes!

Why I’m liking them:
+ Their names are small and memorable: Tanu, CJ, Kat, and Shea.
+ I’ve continued to play their debut single, “Would You Like That?”, for days now.
+Their growing promotion efforts reminds me of the proper hard work the Spice Girls put into their debut.
+ They appear to be able to dance in a manner that is not purely of the slut variety.
+ This rehearsal video seems to confirm that.
+ They ever so slightly remind me of the Sugababes. SLIGHTLY.
+ Lord knows, since the demise of Danity Kane (RIP), we need another female pop group in America.

Why I’m not:
+ This particularly hard-to-swallow sentence from their bio: “An Asian, rocker/rapper, an Indian soul singer, a Russian breaker/ballerina and a Jamaican pop princess forming the new voice of change and female empowerment, while striving for excellence and success through music… in a nutshell: the American Dream!”
+ They ever so slightly remind me of The Saturdays. SLIGHTLY.
+ It could all turn out to be quite shit after all.

Head over to their MySpace to hear two more snippets from the No’s: “Burn Rubber” and “7 Years Bad Luck.” Let me know what you think!

6137675002fd47f92a4c57608949b353 "Revolver" Leaks, William Orbit Speaks
Today, the full demo of “Revolver,” a supposedly new track of Madonna‘s upcoming Greatest Hits package has leaked. I’m still too dubious to believe that this will actually be used, but for the purposes of this post, I shall entertain the notion.

“Revolver” is like an increasingly urban spin on anything off of Britney‘s Blackout–most notably “Radar” and “Piece Of Me.” It’s not as good as those two tracks, but it’s probably more fun than anything off of Hard Candy. Mercifully, the song does not beg for relevancy as pathetically as something like, say, “4 Minutes,” but it’s still too heavy-handed with “modern” production style to be considered unique in any shape or form.

What I’m getting at is that “Revolver” would be a step up from Candy…just not a big one. It’s fun, though…

Secondly, William Orbit has been doing some radio interviews around the UK to promote the release of his new album, My Oracle Lives Uptown which, alas, proved not my cup of tea upon hearing it a few weeks ago. Nonetheless, he had this to say to BBC Radio regarding Madge’s new sound:

She’s into Britney Spears’ last record. Not the last one, the one before. That Britney record with ”Piece Of Me” on it. She wants that brilliant sound. I absolutely adore the sound of ”Piece Of Me” and so does she. It’s one of my favorite tracks when I DJ and I play it. And I love playing Madonna’s song ”Music” she did with Mirwais and she’s right now looking for a sound that is similar to that. And I can’t make that sound even if I tried. It doesn’t come out that way. It all softens up in the end and she’s more into that hardcore dancing thing and so forth.”

Hm. Well, if it’s hardcore that she wants…

Thanks to Candy-Store.org for transcribing…head to their site to hear the whole thing!

YAY!

I just got my limited edition, 100 press “Anthonio” CD single from Annie in the mail today!

It comes with an envelope (WITH A REAL STAMP), a letter written to Anthonio from Annie featuring the song’s lyrics dispersed throughout, and an authentic Kodak picture of Annie with baby!

This is the way music releases should be handled; clever, unique, fun ways of promoting the music that goes beyond a simple download. Sure, I’m a sucker for tangible goods, but its campaigns like this that prove that music is about more than music–it’s an experience!

As for Anthonio, I hope you’re pleased with yourself. You know, the baby’s got your eyes…

Seems like I only just did a remix post. Well, I kind of did on Sunday, but this is the proper Weekend edition! A lot of jittery electro nonsense this time around. If I had to recommend anything, it’s the Passion Pit mix of Dan Black‘s track, “Symphonies.” It jumps from trip-hop, to rave, turns down the BPM, and then does it all over again…fun!

As usual, take what you want, leave what you don’t.

DL: Passion Pit – Little Secrets (Internal Friends Complain Remix)
DL: Dan Black – Symphonies (Passion Pit Remix)
DL: Fonzie ft. Flam – Hands Up (Teh Interwebz Kids Remix)
DL: Markus Lange & Daniel Dexter – We Were Wild (Disco Trash Music Remix)
DL: Eli Smith – Party All Knight (True Pseudo Mix)
