Sky Ferreira: 17 (Video Premiere)

I’ve been keeping an eye out for Sky Ferreira–the rambunctious 17-year-old L.A. response to Lily Allen–for some time now: From her manic tweets to the A-list producers she’s magically working with for her debut album (Paul Epworth; Dallas Austin) to the rather salacious photos (she’s 17!) posted while out partying with the likes of Ke$ha and Katy Perry.

Tonight, the video for her debut single “17″ has been released, and it’s really quite something. I can’t tell if the video events are entirely autobiographical, or if her current lifestyle is meant to mirror that which is being portrayed here, or if her life is just some strange mixture of both. It’s basically uncomfortable, un-sexy, and as awkward as the slightly off-ish melody of the chorus.

She’s certainly going the Lolita route for this release, almost like a scrubbed clean, 21st century pop upgrade of Fiona Apple‘s superb “Criminal.”

I just haven’t made up my mind as to whether Ferreira’s the real deal or not. Time will tell!

    Wow. She looks 15 actually. That’s one of those videos that is meant to be “commentary” but is actually appealing to dirty old men. It’s kind of a creepy way to launch her.

    And the processing of the vocal on the chorus is odd. Or maybe it’s my laptop?

    If you followed her before she became well known , you’d know she was a party/it girl since she was about 15 so this song is based on how it was . Read some of her interviews instead of getting the wrong information xo

    Really, I get what they’re doing with her, its just the single is shit….. I was so looking forward to hearing what all these producers have been doing with her. Is this the best? All hype….. I hope not. It’s like Fernando Garibay, Ryan Tedder, Red One etc took over the last sugar babes album and it was shit. Hype is shit. Good songs are good songs. Great songs sell albums (Lady Gaga) Who cares who’s this girls been working with if they dont come up with something more than an image and a Lolita vibe.

    Where are her parents is right..goodness! Love the song but damn girl have some class..I went out at 17 too but I kept it on the DL and still had mad fun..I just wasn’t flaunting it to the whole world..I understand she’s trying to be edgy and shit but she needs to rethink what she is really saying to young girls by promoting this? I sure wouldn’t want my daughter acting this way.
