I’ll admit it: I’ve been sleeping on CocknBullKid for a while now.
Why? It’s a shamefully silly reason, yet entirely real nonetheless: She has literally the worst stage name of all time.
No, but seriously: It reads like one of those terrible hipster bands that mass CC’s me along with every other site across the blogosphere with their awful electro-rock trash and horrible neon-colored graphics.
But CockNBullKid, better Anita Blay, is not trash at all. In fact, she’s quite brilliant.
Having released a smattering of singles a few years back as thecocknbullkid (note: not a better name), the UK songstress was soon signed to Moshi Moshi Records (Island Records) in 2009.
Blay has since released two incredible songs from her upcoming studio album due out in May, Adulthood, including “One Eye Closed” and the Lily Allen-esque “Hold On To Your Misery.” Both songs evoke dozens of musical influences, from swinging, ’60′s Motown rhythms to flares of ’80′s New Wave.
Now, CocknBullKid is preparing the third single of the bunch, and arguably the best: “Asthma Attack.”
With a sparkling synthesized beat and an entirely infectious chorus, “Asthma Attack” is CocknBullKid’s most modern sounding single yet.
As MuuMuse contributor Sam Lansky noted when breathlessly describing the song to me (you see what I did there?), there’s a certain tinge of Xenomania mid-tempo UK synth-pop balladry a la Girls Aloud‘s “Call The Shots” or Mini Viva‘s “I Wish” that makes the track all the more spiritually fulfilling.
Plus, as a boy with numerous allergies (and even more deep-seated anxieties), I find that “Asthma Attack” resonates deeply with me, leading me to tuck this one into my pocket straight away. You know, right next to the inhaler.
CocknBullKid–despite that name–is the real deal. So calm down, put your headphones on and take a long, deep breath.
“Asthma Attack” was released on March 20. (iTunes UK)
Katy Perry just released the video for her newly crowned #1 single on the Billboard Hot 100: “E.T. (feat. Kanye West),” which also happens to be one of the best offerings from her 2010 Grammy-nominated album, Teenage Dream.
…Great makeup.
“E.T.” was released on February 11. (iTunes)
filed under: Alisha, Barbra Streisand, Bargain Bin Adventures, Christina Aguilera, Madonna, Peaches, Rod Stewart, Stevie Nicks
It’s been a while, but this one’s a rull good one.
Lollygagging ’round the streets of Williamsburg, Brooklyn last weekend after seeing Stevie Nicks and Rod Stewart‘s Heart & Soul Tour (which was simultaneously fantastic and amazing, thank you for asking), my boyfriend and I happened across a series of vinyls against the wall of an apartment, lazily stacked next to a trashcan.
And while I’m not personally one for bed bugs, he had no problem diving in headfirst to see if there were any gems hidden in the mix. (I’ve trained him well.)
Cue the find: Freestyle pop artist Alisha‘s self-titled 1985 debut album off of Vanguard Records.
Immediately struck by the incredible cover art featuring an ’80′s-tastic Alisha chilling in bed, hanging on the telephone and rocking a double-length pearl necklace, I knew I had to have it. So I snatched and ran, knowing full well there was no way the owner could have possibly meant to toss away such a classic.
Alisha, as I soon learned, is a Freestyle pop artist from the ’80′s. She actually had an incredible run on the charts with her debut album, selling over 2 million copies and charting three singles in the Top 10 of the US Hot Dance Billboard Charts.
She would go on to release two more albums (1987′s Nightwalkin’ and 1990′s Bounce Back) and chart a few more singles, including 1999′s “You Wanna Be A Star (Superstar)” for the Molly Shannon classic, Superstar.
As for the tunes featured on Alisha, let’s be honest here: Every song basically sounds like a canned cut from Madonna. Sure, it’s a back-handed compliment…but a damn fine compliment nonetheless! The album is a mix of fierce, cutting freestyle beats worthy of a seriously sweaty workout session on the dance floor.
Click above to watch Alisha–looking something like the love child between Peaches and Barbra Streisand (okay, so maybe just the nose) that’s been slapped across the face by Christina Aguilera‘s “Moulin Rouge” make-up palette–as she struts it out to “Baby Talk,” her first and only #1 on the US Hot Dance Chart (and the best song Love & Kisses-era Dannii Minogue never recorded.)
Yet of all the gems on the album, from “All Night Passion” to “Stargazing,” my hands-down favorite of the bunch is none other than “Too Turned On.” (Too obvious from the title alone?)
The dance floor filler finds Alisha telling her man to stand back and take cover–’cause she’s just too damn turned on! Between infectious hand claps, saxophone synthesizer solos, and even a dazzling xylophone rhythm break in between the chorus and verses–it’s an utterly delicious jam that must be experienced to be believed.
“‘Cause I’m too turned on, can’t hold back / All heated up and can’t cool down,” Alisha cries out. Calling all modern pop artistes: Care to give this one a polishing off please? Dannii, baby?
Whether it’s her homegrown NYC appeal, inimitable stage presence, or the fact that she actually took time to thank “the guys at the Shell station” in her own album credits, Alisha is one MuuMuse Approved mamacita.
I’M TOO TURNED ON!
AMAZING SINGLE SELECTION ALERT!
Keri Hilson is set to shoot a video for “Lose Control (feat. Nelly),” one of the smoothest cuts off of her sophomore record, No Boys Allowed.
The video will be helmed by Colin Tilley, the same director responsible for such clips as Hilson’s “One Night Stand (feat. Chris Brown),” Shontelle‘s “Perfect Nightmare” and Ciara‘s “Speechless.”
Get it, Miss Keri Baby!
First of all, I’m only posting this because it confirms the very close whispers I’ve been hearing for weeks…
Rising pop star Sabi was recently interviewed by MTV regarding her experience in making Femme Fatale with Britney Spears. When speaking about “(Drop Dead) Beautiful,” she ended on a rather interesting final note:
“To be the only female on Britney’s album, just in general, this whole thing is just bananas. I feel very lucky to be this person in this position right now,” she said. “It is crazy. She does not do features that often and I think maybe it hasn’t sunken in yet. It’s a wonderful opportunity and maybe when it starts circulating, it’ll sink in what’s really going on. But right now, I don’t know where I’m at but it feels good. When this song hits radio, it’s going to be surreal.”
So, um…did Sabi just spill the beans? Is “(Drop Dead) Beautiful” going to be the third single, or is she just steamin’ like a pot full of vegetables?
Again, I’ve heard several whispers. But if you want my personal opinion? Please, Team Brit Brit…don’t let this come true.
Hail RiRi, full of grace…
Lady Fenty graces the cover of April’s Rolling Stone to talk about boyfriends, Battleship and her current hit, S&M.”
From Rolling Stone:
Rihanna’s hit single “S&M” is semi-autobiographical. “Being submissive in the bedroom is really fun,” she says. “You get to be a little lady, to have somebody be macho and in charge of your shit. That’s fun to me…I like to be spanked. Being tied up is fun. I like to keep it spontaneous. Sometimes whips and chains can be overly planned – you gotta stop, get the whip from the drawer downstairs. I’d rather have him use his hands.”
Now, if only she’d stop being so shy.
Ready for more LOVE?
J-Lo dialed in to On Air With Ryan Seacrest this morning to preview one of the new songs from her upcoming studio album LOVE?: “Into You (feat. Lil Wayne).”
Lopez’s second selection from LOVE? glides into the speakers a cool, free-flowing Carribean breeze recalling Rihanna‘s “What’s My Name?” and Keri Hilson‘s “Lose Control,” bringing down the BPM from her mega-smash lead single, “On The Floor.”
“When I look into your eyes it’s over / you got me hooked with your love controller,” Lopez croons above the mid-tempo beat.
Looking forward to hearing the rest? Head over to La Lopez’s official Facebook page and “like” the song to have it unlocked and sent to iTunes early. “Like” to Love?–get it? (I think it’s genius marketing, personally.)
LOVE? will be released in May. (iTunes)
Godney made a stellar appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live! last night, acting in two mega-dorable skits (including a tattoo trade with Jimmy, and a truly hilarious one featuring the boys of Jackass) that had her flexin’ her funny muscles all night long. That’s the Britney I know and love!
Later on, Queen B took to the stage to perform two songs (she performed all three from the usual Femme Fatale set thus far, though only “Till The World Ends” and “Hold It Against Me” made the final cut for the show.)
And as for how it went down compared to Good Morning America? Well–she got me spinnin’ 180 degrees! Last night’s “Hold It Against Me,” somehow,” was even better than her “Till The World Ends” performance. Her confidence and energy were ten times higher–and those eyes that she gives the crowd at 1:13? AMAZING!
You know, maybe she did just have the first performance jitterbugs–’cause that “Hold It Against Me” performance is pure fire!
All Hail the Queen of Poo Cocktail Supreme!
