Björk to Release ‘Biophilia’ as iPad App, Announces First Single “Crystalline”

Björk has just announced that the first single from her forthcoming studio album Biophilia will be “Crystalline,” due to be released toward the end of June.

Along with the announcement came a 30-second teaser of the Iceland goddess listening to the song while driving around the countryside during a rainstorm, which you can watch above.

While it’s not very clear/easy to hear, “Crystalline” sounds kind of clangy and electro-organic, like a mix between songs off of Debut and Vespertine. SO promising!

In addition, an article written for The Guardian last week revealed that Biophilia will not only see conventional CD release later this year, but as an “app album” for the iPad as well. Ever the techno-crusader, Björk will be releasing each song from the album as its own iPad app–harbored inside of a single ‘mother app’–for listeners to interact with each song individually.

From The Guardian:

Along with a conventional album release, complete with music videos – at least one of which has been directed by Eternal Sunshine’s Michel Gondry – Biophilia will also be released as an “app album” and premiered as a multimedia live extravaganza at MIF.

Biophilia for iPad will include around 10 separate apps, all housed within one “mother” app. Each of the smaller apps will relate to a different track from the album, allowing people to explore and interact with the song’s themes or even make a completely new version. It will also be an evolving entity that will grow as and when the album’s release schedule dictates, with new elements added.

YES YES YES!
