Alesha Dixon

Let’s “Breathe Slow” with Alesha for a few minutes.

It’s a shame about the video, isn’t it?

It’s all sweet and silly (and a dash of tamed “Hung Up” during the dance studio sequences) up until the two minute mark, in which Miss Dixon dons a truly ridiculous headband of chicken feathers and twirly things, opens up her jacket to a glittery corset, and brings it all steadily downhill from there.

I simply adore the dozens of onlookers watching Alesha sashay her way down the strip. My guess is that about 99.3% of them had absolutely no clue who she was. I can only hear it now:

“Who is it?”
“I don’t know. Do you know?”
“Me? No. Well, wait…Isn’t that a member of Destiny’s Child?”
“Her? No, I don’t think so.”
“It isn’t Beyoncé, then?”
“You know what? Maybe it is. Actually, I think it is. BEYONCÉ! BEYONCÉ! PUT A RING ON IT!”

Keep holding on for that “We’re in Las Vegas; Obligatory Elvis impersonator needed” moment at 3:20.

Television performance of the year? Quite possibly.

Check out Alesha Dixon performing her single, “The Boy Does Nothing” on Strictly Come Dancing last night. Incredible, incredible performance…Worlds better than the song’s own video! The live vocals were spot-on (if not better than the recording!) and the riffs were fantastic. Toss that on top of a well choreographed finish (with heels no less), and you’ve prepared yourself one heaping helping of regret that Polydor must be choking on right about now.

As a little treat, I’ve got “Colours of the Rainbow,” (Soulshock & Karlin) an upcoming album track being offered on Alesha’s website for free right now. It’s very Michelle Williams euro-Timbaland, and generally quite nice.

Alright Alesha, I’m going to lay it out straight for you: The video is a bit of a mess. I mean, I get the whole ‘raucous affair’ scenario (dancing! women! splits!) but it’s barely exciting. I suppose the choreography could have been tighter, the moves could have been made more intricate, and the shots more varied. Really though, it does nothing…The video does nothing.

Luckily, the song is far more glorious in high quality form, and it sure does do something…Namely, provide the greatest middle eight we’ve seen this side of ’08. “I wanna see you work!” Luscious!

Unsurprisingly, the new Alesha Dixon track is as amazing as it’s been made out to be. If not more, really.

This ought to come as no surprise. Lest we forget, Mizz Dixon was already to be lauded and revered for a certain shelved release a few months back.

Let us pray The Alesha Show drops as promised on Nov. 17. Now go fetch your dancing shoes…Alesha’s orders!

Well hey there, it’s the video for the dance song of the week, “Daddy O” by Wideboys!

Things you need to know here:

88a3adb935e9b89370aa0a8486404db6 Dance, Daddy O!Firstly, the singer’s name is Shaznay Lewis. Shaz. Nay. Yes, it’s pronounced as deliciously as its spelled.

Shaznay’s got a snazzy tattoo on her tatty and hails from the almighty All Saints. A persistent bunch of lassies though they are, they were dropped from Parlophone after failing to crack the UK with their second single “Chick Fit,” (which really wasn’t all that good to begin with) and have since begun looking for a new label. Godspeed.

The label spent more money on Wideboys than Dannii. Again.

The song sounds like every dance-based reggaeton song ever, except it’s climbing the UK charts at break-neck speed for no apparent reason. Good on them.

Shaz’s voice (I’ve decided it an appropriate nickname at this point) is basically that of Alesha Dixon. Yes, pure cat.

Many of my fellow self-proclaimed pop scholars will agree that one of the greater tragedies of late was the cancellation of Alesha Dixon‘s not-so-anticipating solo album. Alesha, for those unaware, was a member of Misteeq, a short lived three piece band that produced such classics as “Scandalous” and that’s about it (though they had their own Greatest Hits album). Alesha sought a solo career shortly after their demise. She had released her two singles, “Lipstick,” and “Knock Down,” which were short lived hits before her eventual career collapse leading to an inevitable celebrity dance show appearance. In her first career victory, Alesha won Strictly Come Dancing in the UK.

88a56be98b6c54ff77698e50633d5c39 Not Down For The CountSounds like a whole bucketful of fail, right? Well it is. Or was, really. Lucky for us, the album was not completely canned. Instead, Alesha’s original solo album was just serviced to Asia today. Did she have an audience there? Guess we’ll find out. Even the album cover changed (for the worse). Is somebody doing this for fun, or is this genuine sabotage, people?

Regardless, the album is full of funk-pop genius. Alesha’s ferocious raspy vocals are truly delightful; it’s a shame she wasn’t accepted by the general public. She’s got that old souled voice that would have been warmly received in the golden days of Motown. As far as the music, the beats here are simply unstoppable. I already knew that her singles were fire, but after hearing the album in its entirety, I can officially label her career’s buckling “a total and utter shame.” For a limited time, I’m offering the album in full, along with two or three track highlights to introduce Alesha, so please don’t miss this.

At her best, Alesha resembles a female incarnation of Prince. I’m really impressed with the melodies throughout. I’m thinking the best description of the song quality is Amy Winehouse‘s vocals on top of baile-funk music like “The Hook Up” from Britney‘s In The Zone. The album will be sorely missed on this side of the world. I give it an A. Perhaps even an A+. Truly!
