013 JoJo Premieres Incredible First Track From Upcoming Mixtape, In The Dark

Oh my word.

JoJo has unveiled the first song from her forthcoming mixtape (Can’t Take That Away From Me) on Rap-Up this morning, and it is HOT. FIYA.

“In The Dark,” which was co-written along with producer Jordan Gatsby, is a chilly, slow-burning grinder with enough sax appeal to be safely declared one of the sexiest things I’ve heard all summer.

I mean, what with all those whispered coos and heavy breathing throughout the bridges and chorus? CHILD, PLEASE. “I only know him in the dark,” JoJo croons to pleasurable new heights as the chorus bass beats grind and swirl against a minimal twinkling of bright piano.

The track is also heavily processed, but with that kind of intentional robot warble that says to the listener, “LOOK HERE. This is just for a cool, spacey effect. Not to mask a bad voice.” Besides, we all know JoJo can blow, so don’t get butthurt about it.

But seriously, how sick is this beat? OOF!

For fans of chilly urban a la Cassie‘s “Me & U,” Miss Janet‘s best booty jams, and any and all good fucking music.

Brava, JoJo.

diamond supply co x cassie1 Official Girl: Cassie Collaborates with Diamond Supply Co. for Summer 2010 Collection

I love Cassie.

Or, well…I love the idea of Cassie. In my mind, I see her as a kind of icy, electro R&B princess-in-waiting yet to release her grand opus.

Then again, maybe it’s just my Connecticut bias.

All week, I’ve been listening to “Me & U” and “Long Way 2 Go” on repeat (as I am wont to do). Four years after her initial debut, Cassie’s two major singles continue to be the epitome of chilly electro-R&B perfection.

However, her sophomore effort has been hopelessly mired in setbacks, including dozens of song leaks (such as the impossibly delicious “Fuck U Silly” featuring Nicki Minaj), nudie pix, and salacious gossip.

As a result, we’re still waiting.

In the meantime, Cassie’s been involved in a number of fashion collaborations, including a fierce-as-fuck Fall/Winter 2009 campaign for DimePiece.

Now she’s teaming up with L.A. street-wear designers Diamond Supply Co. and photographer Estevan Oriol for a new Summer 2010 campaign. You can check out some of the images of the campaign here and here. Looks promising.

Information on the campaign is still minimal, so stay tuned by visiting Diamond Supply Co.’s official website.

NOW RELEASE A DAMN FOLLOW-UP ALBUM, GIRL. Goddamn.

I’ve decided Amerie‘s new video for “Heard ‘Em All,” directed by Anthony Mandler, borders on sheer brilliance.

If I were merely talking adjectives, I would use such terms as ‘ill,’ ‘fierce,’ ‘raw,’ ‘hot,’ ‘sexy,’ ‘Ciara-esque,’ ‘Matrix-like,’ and ‘really great dancey bits.’

You know why? Because I’m rooting for her. Not as much as I want my icy-electro hip-hop queen Cassie to make a comeback, but hey…I think she deserves another shot.

Keep doin’ whatcha doin’, Amerie.

ab8ba8419e7016259ab3e9a8cdd09c46 Officially Look everyone, it’s Cassie, the R&B one-or-two time dark dancefloor sensation responsible for the major hit “Me & U” and mini-hit “Long Way 2 Go” two years ago!

Yep, she’s back. And this time, she’s in the hands of Danja and The Clutch with “Official Girl.” It’s a little mid-tempo ditty that never really builds anywhere, although its disjointed flow is ultimately quite addictive. Points have been awarded for the rhyming of “ultimatum” with “verbatum.” Go ahead and grab it, and let’s remember once more why we fell in love with this Connecticut-bred Abercrombie bag model.
