Cee Lo Green

Cee Lo Green‘s been keeping the world grooving for several years now thanks to his penchant for ceaselessly catchy melodies, including 2006′s “Crazy” (as Gnarls Barkley) and his 2010 hit, “Fuck You.”

Now, he’s back for more: “I Want You (Hold On To Love)” is Green’s fourth single from his latest solo record The Lady Killer, set to be released on July 4.

The song, which is actually a souped-up version of the LP original mixed by Jack Splash, was co-crafted by my favorite producer of the year: Fraser T Smith (Adele, Britney Spears).

Splash’s take on the track adds a deep disco bass line to the otherwise soulful production, giving the song a bit more of a swinging, summery bounce. “I want you / To run away and experience something new,” Green croons during the soaring, feel-good chorus.

Check out the official video above, in which Mr. Green fancies himself the next Liberace, gallivanting ’round Vegas with feathers, rhinestones and girls galore. How positively glam!

This track is giving me all the right vibrations. It deserves to be the next Cee Lo smash to burn straight up the charts!

“I Want You (Hold On To Love)” will be released on July 4. (iTunes)

grammy award1 Disappointment, Televised Live: The Nominations for the 53rd Annual Grammys

It’s that magical time again!

A time when–year after year–music enthusiasts of all walks of life come together to scratch their heads in complete and utter befuddlement while sifting through bizarrely incomplete, lackluster lists of nominees for the biggest categories of the most coveted award in the music industry: ~The Grammys~!

So let’s have a looksee at the four major categories announced on the live CBS broadcast tonight, shall we?

Song of the Year
Eminem & Rihanna – “Love the Way You Lie”
Cee Lo Green – “F**k You”
Miranda Lambert – “The House That Built Me”
Ray LaMontagne – “Beg, Steal, or Borrow”
Lady Antebellum – “Need You Now”

While none of these songs are actually anywhere near the greatest songs of the year (my own list will come in the following few weeks), the title ought to go to Em and RiRi for their seven week #1 summer mega smash, “Love the Way You Lie.” It’s an excellent production, if nothing else but for the leading lady’s aching chorus.

That being said, many, many props for the Cee Lo recognition!

Best New Artist
Drake
Esperanza Spalding
Justin Bieber
Florence + the Machine
Mumford & Sons

While Bieber will likely swipe this (despite having been around for–what, three years now?), there’s no competition: Florence + The Machine is the ultimate pick. Powerful, mystical and entirely fresh, their debut album Lungs continues to blow my mind nearly a year and a half after its release, still on heavy rotation.

Florence Welch is a serious force to be reckoned with–and this won’t be the last time her name will appear at this awards ceremony. Just wait and see.

Best Album of the Year
Drake
Eminem
Lady Antebellum
Lady Gaga
Katy Perry

First, let me bitch: Excuse me? Do not.

Do not even tell me Teenage Dream is anywhere near worthy of attaining the title of “Best” anything. Other than its sublime title track, Teenage Dream is nothing more than a showcase of big label dollars and cheap gloss. Cheap fun? Sure. Quality? Stop it. Stop it right now.

In a year that saw the release of Robyn‘s Body Talk, Kelis’ Flesh Tone, Kylie Minogue‘s Aphrodite, Sia‘s We Are Born and countless other releases–the fact that Teenage Dream is getting the glory is actually a damn near crime.

Anyway, the title goes to Lady Gaga (obviously)–The Fame Monster was the greatest album (EP) of 2009.

Record of the Year
B.O.B. – Nothing On You (feat. Bruno Mars)
Eminem – Love The Way You Lie (feat. Rihanna)
Cee Lo Green – Fuck You
Lady Antebellum – Need You Now
Jay-Z – Empire State of Mind (feat. Alicia Keys)

While Princess RiRi and Em may also snatch this one for their summer chart stretch, the title should really be handed to Jay-Z for his “Empire State of Mind.” The song is an instant classic upon first play, destined to go down in history as the first truly major 21st century ode to NYC.

As usual, the industry’s bigwigs remains (mostly) oblivious, frivolous and startlingly outdated.

ceelo green fuck you lady killer Cee Lo Green Begs for More with Second Single from The Lady Killer, Its Ok

After denial comes anger. Then, bargaining.

It seems that Cee Lo Green‘s moving right along the five stages of grief with “It’s Ok,” the follow-up to the blisteringly bitter lead single from the singer’s third studio album The Lady Killer, “Fuck You.” (LISTEN)

“Please baby, please lover / Let’s find a way to forgive each other,” Cee Lo pleads in the swinging, Motown-infused up-tempo co-produced by up-and-coming Norwegian production duo ELEMENT and Paul Epworth (Florence + The Machine‘s Lungs; Annie‘s Don’t Stop). I guess someone’s not so bothered to be considered an Atari anymore.

Every lick as catchy as “Fuck You,” “It’s Ok” is almost destined to receive the same radio lovin’ upon its release (if not more!)–and deservedly so: This man’s got some serious hits on his hands.

Oh, by the way–NPR is currently streaming The Lady Killer in full. (LISTEN)

The Lady Killer will be released on November 9. (iTunes)

champagne lemonade packshot web Introduucing...Ed Drewett!

Having just penned the #1 debut single for the rather attractive boy band The Wanted (“All Time Low”), as well being featured on Professor Green‘s springtime smash (“I Need You Tonight”), Virgin Records’ latest male pop sensation Ed Drewett isn’t exactly a stranger to the UK pop charts at the moment.

On November 1, the singer will release his debut solo effort: “Champagne Lemonade.”

“Champagne Lemonade” is a sparkling, synth-tastic affair, produced by former member of Perfect Pop production troupe Xenomania, Tim Powell. There are some vague dubstep undertones throughout, as well as some Calvin Harris-esque euphoria electronica.

With his debut, the singer bemoans his underdog status while competing for a lady’s affections. Thematically it’s similar to Cee Lo‘s “Fuck You,” albeit with less talk of Ataris and more of delicious beverages.

For US readers, the video isn’t available from Vevo (international copyrights, fascist pigs, etc.)–click here to watch it in the meantime from The Sun.

Above is the newly released video to accompany the single, in which Drewett and some sexy ladies pound some balls around in inappropriately dressy attire. I like that sort of thing.

While Drewett’s single is all shades of amazing, I highly recommend a trip over to Drewett’s MySpace to hear the incredible demo for “Parallels,” which is probably one of the more incredible records I’ve heard this year.

“Parallels” plays like a Sting track crossed with a ravey, teary-eyed version of Madonna‘s “Get Together,” as Drewett waxes inspirational across a series of hi-NRG synths: “You only once, then you die, then you’re through / But you only die once, so will you live ’til you do?” Truly, truly fantastic.

“Champagne Lemonade” will be released on November 1.

Drewett’s upcoming debut album will be released in March 2011, featuring production credits from the likes of Greg Kurstin and Fraser T. Smith.

Something tells me it’s going to be very good.

Many thanks to Sir Oliver Meakings of Teen Today for first making me aware of Ed Drewett.

ceelo Cee Lo Green: Fuck You (Video Premiere)

I’ve been casually listening to Cee Lo Green’s fabulous new kiss-off single, “Fuck You,” for some time now. Now there’s an official video, and it’s just as good as the song.

“Fuck You” is nice because it allows you to loudly sing the words “Fuck you,” and it’s perfectly okay to do so because those are just the lyrics of the song so really you can’t be held accountable if anyone tries to scold you about it, and if they do you can just say “Fuck you.”

Actually, it’s kind of the same triumphantly merry song as Lily Allen‘s “Fuck You,” except this one is less of a political statement and is more likely to perform well on the charts. Sorry, Lily.

Now let’s hope the song doesn’t blow up Gnarls Barkley “Crazy”-style and force everyone to hate it forever and curse its existence until the end of time.

Ease the fuck up, radio. I’m just saying.
