First we were given Ladyhawke‘s interpretation of the track, and now, the original D-I-Y Pop MySpacer herself has jumped in with her own rendition of “Womanizer”! To no one’s surprise, Lily Allen‘s version is utterly brilliant. Lily’s caustic, sarcastic little ‘tude works perfectly for the track, especially within the talky bits of the chorus. Even the middle eight is a bit lush! Naughty minx.

This is Sarah McIntosh, better known as The Good Natured. As soon as the paced drum beats come kicking into the start of her track “Warriors,” you may also recognize her sound as an immediate success. Quite unique is the fact that every aspect of the song contains a brilliant moment: The verses, the bridge, and the immense, skittish chorus. With that childish touch of knowing innocence a la Kate Nash, Lily Allen, and Charlotte Sometimes, the 17-year-old songstress adds a dash of electro intesnity to the table along with the jazzy earnestness of her vocals.

a9668c047aad7fa168e45240e78ae739 Introducing...Charlotte SometimesI think this could be the beginning of something really lovely. For no reason in particular, I accidentally stumbled upon the MySpace of up-and-coming artist, Charlotte Sometimes while avoiding my studies. With a genre label of “Nu-Jazz/Alternative/Pop” (ooh!), I was naturally quite intrigued. After the first song off the page (“How I Could Just Kill A Man”), I was sold. It was catchy, melodic, and full of deep, rich sound. She’s got a definite top notch singer-songwriter quality, but thankfully lacks the monotony that plagues so many one hit wonder crooners that pop up on the radio every month or so. “Love Song,” anyone? Just saying.

Like a more orchestrated version of Fiona Apple‘s voice, Charlotte delivers with a rich set of emotion-fueled pipes and an urgent vibrato. It’s a little amazing that she’s only twenty, since her vocal skills are at the same level as that of a seasoned musician. I’m also quite smitten with her self-image. She seead0e02cb9f3661cc48c05bacf3ff2ea6 Introducing...Charlotte Sometimesms to bemuse herself with the idea of a stage persona versus her natural self: “For the most part I like to write poetry and hang out in my apartment and cry, but when I’m on stage I’m a man eating machine. It’s a way of being two people but still remaining myself.”

The man eating becomes apparent from the get-go off of her debut, Waves & The Both Of Us. The songs are charged with a burning energy with lyrics than are more biting than one would expect. They’re absolutely loaded with well executed vocal performances, never providing a dull moment…I’m honestly blown away by her singing ability. As for her sound? It’s a refreshing blend of mellowed hip-hop grooves a la Lily Allen, chugging guitars, a deep nu-jazzy undercurrent, and a nice melodic Regina Spektor nature, give or take a crazy pill…a winning combination, in my opinion.

So far, so very wonderful. I see opportunities of promise, and growth, and all of the squishy things that make a musician pump out tunes far, far into the future. This is the first time I’ve been excited about a new artist for some time. Give her a try, you never know when they’ll take off into the mainstream. Check her out at her MySpace, buy the album (which was actually released two days ago) on iTunes, or stream the entire album over at iMeem now!

16a658fbbf551fd6c9e9c406fc174f20 Weapon Of Massive ConsumptionThe O.G. of bitchy, internet UK celebrities, Lily Allen herself has posted double demos on her MySpace page today. After just one day, she’s already got around 30,000 listens for each song. The first, “I Don’t Know,” is a sarcastic take on the lifestyles of the rich and plastic. Shame, I thought she was being serious initially. Dozens of points awarded for the phrase used in this post’s title, as well as “fuckloads of diamonds.” I love this song, truly. It’s both lush and cheeky, which are two of the most prized traits of pop. Take note of the photo as the album cover: Rachel Zoe. Ha. Ha.

“I Could Say” starts out with a warm piano melody. It’s very Kate Nash, though that sort of comparison is a bit redundant. The separating factor is the gradual introduction of trippy, synth beats that increasingly overwhelm the track. Not only that, but the vocals start to slip into lushness as well. It’s beautifully layered, and rich. It’s almost Imogen like, which is a real treat.

A wonderful start to whatever comes next, Lily.

tila%20tequila thumb Tila Tequila
Tila Tequila is fascinating. I wrote a college thesis on this woman. Except it had nothing to do with her. You see, Tila Tequila is not your standard Hollywood celebrity. If you didn’t know, Tila Nguyen grew in fame from a good ol’ grassroots campaign via Myspace, gradually becoming the most popular person (according to view and friend counts) on the website, and then developing modeling contracts with popular magazines such as Maxim. That’s not what makes her interesting. Basically, and this will result in the loss of the few visitors I have (though I love you all so very dearly), Tila Tequila may be a representation of the future of Hollywood.

STOP SCOWLING FOR A MOMENT AND BREATHE YOU LOLLYGAGGER. I’m not trying to shower her in praise or say that she has the it-factor. Personally, I think she’s just a cute girl with some distracting tattoos and a nice pair of hand-made chesticles. But Tila represents something bigger: the fact that today’s me-culture can and does produce instant celebrity. Look at her, look at Chris Crocker, look at Perez Hilton. Self-made household names. It’s an ode to the power of user-generated content on the Internet. And yes, I do think this will matter in the future. Sean Kingston (“Beautiful Girls”)was discovered through Myspace, as was Lily Allen and Kate Nash. It’s becoming too large to ignore. All that being said, Tila Tequila is PEOPLE!!!

As for a shot of reality, Tila’s music is not groundbreaking or particularly inventive. Doesn’t stop me from loving them though. Generally, the tracks are a varied fusion of hard rap and pop. “I Love U” is an infectiously over-the-top “hardcore” rap song about how much Tila loves you, and will also kill you. The song I wanted to display however, “Paralyze,” is brilliant. It’s a tiny gem amongst her other tracks. It’s short, sweet, and pretty. You might know it, as it was played during the season finale of A Shot At Love. And yes, I know, Dani should have won, you’re really clever and different for thinking that too.

Check out Tila Tequila’s “Paralyze” on YouTube!

And you, what do you think?
