It’s almost been a minute since I’d last seen or heard something involving Lady Gaga.

Here she is with clothing designer/terrible tattoo enthusiast Marc Jacobs celebrating the delicate aesthetic of New York City for the “New York” issue (#67) of V Magazine.

It’s time to talk frills, y’all.

The runways have been hit hard lately by the Fall/Winter ’08/’09 Wave all over the world. But one of the most influential ( and arguably, most controversial) designers as of late, Marc Jacobs, has just put his work on display last night, unveiling his creations for his line, Marc Jacobs (not to be confused with diffusion line, Marc by Marc Jacobs.) And so, I reviewed it.

The event was set upon a giant square stage with a cool pallet of deep blue lighting and earthy red stage lights, with the help of Sonic Youth banging out their tunes mindlessly toward the back of the stage while dozens of A-listers watched eagerly within the audience. Devoid of color and lacking in texture, Jacob’s collection adhered closely to his characteristic usage of oblong and often asymmetric body shapes. Past interviews with Jacobs reveal that as a designer, he chooses not to create “hot” clothing, instead opting for unfamiliar aesthetics. The clothing presented fell in line with his preferred style, which at a point became monotonous. The models too were bland, plagued with alternating hat styles (three-pointed or frilly) and skin tight ponytails, which I found distracting and unimpressive. A nice nod to Kylie Minogue’s “Can’t Get You Out Of My Head” video though from one of the girls with that white wrap-over head dress! I did see some winners in the bunch though, including the droop-necked dresses saved for the end of the collection. Lining the models up together on the scaffolding above the stage made for a neat look through. The show itself was heavy-handed in youthful eclecticism thanks to the ripping tunes from Sonic Youth, but overall I felt that the ’80′s-esque rebellious punk atmosphere didn’t quite live up to the styles displayed on the stage.
