Monster by Meg Myers

Genre: Alternative rock
Sounds like: Fiona Apple, Alanis Morrissette, Marina + The Diamonds

Meet Meg Myers, a rising musician based out of Los Angeles.

While details about the singer are still somewhat minimal, we’ve got one excellent tune to work with: “Monster.”

The song was co-scribed and produced by Doctor Rosen Dosen, the up-and-coming producer responsible for a couple of MuuMuse’s favorite remixes over the past years for acts like Britney and Lady Gaga, as well as his exciting collaborative project with a slew of rising female pop stars, including Kay and Jessie And The Toy Boys, called GIRLS.

Yet Myers’ sound is a complete departure for Rosen: There’s no pop beats to be found here–only jagged riffs and raw, vulnerable lyrics: “My love, too much/Your love, not enough,” Myers sadly croons above a slow-strumming guitar before launching into the song’s haunting chorus: “Oh, what it takes out of me to lay by your side!”

As Rosen explained to me, the song’s stripped production is a nod to ’90′s alt-rock–from Nirvana to Portishead. “What have I done? I’m a fucking monster!” Myers bitterly yelps at one point, her voice quivering with all the anguish of a classic Morrissette angst track.

Although Myers’ 6-track debut EP isn’t due for release until later in January, you can already hear two more cuts from the EP on her official website, including the piano-tinged, hook heavy “Adelaide” and “Poison,” which surges with a slightly more modern electro-rock flare (and was also featured on Rosen Rosen’s Girls Vol. 1.)

What I like most about Myers, as with fellow alt-rock chanteuses Skylar Grey and, to a somewhat more pop-oriented extent Marina And The Diamonds, Lana Del Rey and Sky Ferreira (when she’s in a more punk mood), is that she provides a breath of fresh air in a rapidly smothering climate of club-pop. Don’t get me wrong–I live for the stuff, but there’s more than enough room for some snarling, kick-ass rock chicks to come clawing their way to the top of the charts and adding some much-needed variety to radio.

Coupled with comeback LPs from industry veterans like Garbage and No Doubt a little later in 2012–along with the rumored, much-delayed return of Fiona Apple (dear God, let it be!)–this might just be the year that (good) rock finally makes a comeback.

“Monster” is available as a free download at Myers’ official website.

Neon Hitch – Fuck U Betta by NeonHitch

YASSSS! At long last, the studio version of Neon Hitch‘s “Fuck U Betta,” her latest Benny Blanco-produced single off of her upcoming debut album Beg, Borrow & Steal, has been unleashed onto the Interwebz.

Though Hitch has been performing this one live for months while out on tour, “Fuck U Betta” is finally making its formal appearance in 2012. Now, I’ve already been booty dropping to this one for a while now, and I must say: It’s still a staple in my nightly underwear-dancing-in-my-room sessions. Why? Several reasons:

For one thing (or really, for everything), the hook: “She can fuck you good, but I can fuck you betta!” I mean…DAMN! It packs such a punch! So you went ahead and found yourself a sexy piece? That’s nice, bet she can’t do it like Neon does! Personal anthem much?

Then, there’s that surging beat. It’s a little bit “Hold It Against Me”-lite until the chorus, which is actually a little “I Wanna Go,” right back to the dub-pop inspired skittering breakdown, which is a little bit “Hold It Against Me” again–making this one an easy win for fans of Brit Brit‘s Femme Fatale offerings. Plus, all the warped “Betta, betta, betta, betta, betta, betta, ay!” bits peppered throughout the chorus? So fun! So flail-worthy!

“Bad Dog” was a reg’lar pop stormer, but this? This one’s a no-brainer that’ll keep banging your brains out. Now get this track on the radio STAT!

I CAN FUCK YOU BETTUH, BAYBEE!

“Fuck U Betta” will be released this month to radio. (iTunes)

top50singles2011 MuuMuse Presents: The Top 50 Singles of 2011

Two weeks ago, I presented my Top 25 Albums of 2011. Now…it’s time for the Top 50 Singles of 2011!

If the album list was tough, this was one step short of impossible, Shontelle style. Between rock-solid offerings from my favorite pop princesses, to stunning debut tracks from some of MuuMuse’s Most Anticipated artists, to throbbing dance floor bangers from DJs and producers worldwide–there was simply too much to love in 2011!

As a result, the list took a while. I didn’t sleep. I didn’t eat. I haven’t bathed. I’m literally a disgusting music-minded mess right now.

BUT NOW IT IS COMPLETE!

This is a list of 50 of my favorite offerings of the year (plus one honorable mention which was never actually released as a single.) Since I am giving like the Baby Jesus, I’ve created a full playlist of all my Top 50 tracks on Spotify. You are welcome in advance.

So without further ado, check out the full list below. Remember: If you have a problem with the final ranking, please…don’t hold it against me!

7637039961mylenefarmerd MuuMuse Approved: Mylène Farmer Du Temps

Mylène Farmer, for those unfamiliar, is sort of like the French equivalent of Madonna.

Since her debut in 1986, the iconic fiery-haired French songstress has gone to sell over 30 million records and snag the record for most #1 singles in France–from 1991′s “Désenchantée,” to her 2006 collaboration with Moby “Slipping Away (Crier la vie),” to last year’s stunning electro gem, “Oui mais…non.” (There’s also my personal favorite, 2005′s “Fuck Them All,” which ended up peaking at #2, but it’ll always be #1 in my heart.) In short: She’s a BFD.

On December 5, the singer released 2001.2011, her second greatest hits collection featuring singles from her past three studio albums, along with two new songs. One of which is “Du Temps,” the lead single from the album, which just charted at #8 in France.

With its chilly wisps of electronica and Farmer’s signature Enya-like coos, “Du Temps” is an absolutely lush ‘n’ dreamy synth-pop production. Do I know what she’s singing about? Um, something about time. Taking time. And love. That’s all I need to know really!

The video for the song premiered last week, featuring a mix of both home videos and a dance routine done while splashing around in some shallow water. (The Saturdays could quite literally never.) Prepare for plenty of fierce Kylie-esque hand choreography!

Thanks to Muuser Calen C. for the find!

“Du Temps” was released on November 7. (iTunes)

Dancing In Dirt by MoXiiE

I’ve watched Moxiie evolve for about two years now.

The unsigned NYC artist first caught my attention back in February of 2010 (then performing under the name Kyla Dreams) with her track, “Machine Gun Love.” I was immediately sold: Between the instantly catchy chorus and glittering synth beats, that one song alone kept me keeping close tabs on the up-and-coming songwriter.

Over time, I’ve come to learn that Moxiie’s one thoroughly cool chick with excellent taste–her influences include Madonna, Vanity 6, Debbie Harry and Janet Jackson–and her songs reflect her keen awareness for supreme pop.

After spending years writing for other artists however, the singer suddenly decided to go the solo route:

I did the whole writer thing, hitting tons of studios in L.A. and New York working with so many producers. I got bored with all the cliques and politics. Being one of hundreds of writers vying for a slot on someone else’s project, it felt wrong. It just hit me one day: I have a lot to say–I can write, sing and dance! What the hell am I doing?!

Now known professionally as Moxiie, the songstress has finally unleashed her debut effort today known as the Jungle Pop EP, a raw, crunchy 8-track collection filled with sharp hooks and fresh pop influences and inspired by world beats, popular dance and club sounds, and the gritty textures of New York City.

The EP boasts production from several rising producers, including Fredro (Wonder Girls, Jessica Mauboy), REO (Lil’ Wayne), Jay Deasel (Miranda Lambert), and The SupaSonics.

Buzz by MoXiiE

There’s sizzling cuts like “Buzz” (above) which bangs with a fierce Euro-friendly beat recalling Enur‘s “Calabria,” as well as “Bottle Service,” which plays like a harder-hitting sequel to Far East Movement‘s 2010 summer smash, “Like A G6.”

“Animal” finds Moxiie exploring some slightly left-of-center electronica territory above a marching drum beat, bringing to mind Wynter Gordon‘s brand of smart dance-pop ingenuity: “I want to love you like an animal/I wanna touch you like an animal/I wanna hear the sound of you losing all control,” she purrs.

She even dabbles in some rap-pop at one point on “Platinum P,” meshing old school hip-hop samples with a fresh flow above wild marching drum beats a la Cher Lloyd.

My immediate favorite of the bunch, however, is “Dancing in Dirt” (top), an absolutely relentless uptempo banger with light dubstep flourishes that simply demands to be blared from the speakers of every club across the country: “Don’t you feel sorry for me, ’cause I’ll be dancing in the dirt!” Moxiie declares before diving into the most delicious beat drop. Mmmph!

After hearing what Moxiie’s served up all on her own, there’s no question that she’s got that somethin’ special to propel her into stardom in no time. Record labels and fans alike–take note now.

Moxiie’s currently offering up the entire Jungle Pop EP for just the price of a tweet (not too shabby!), and the EP is also available on iTunes.

Jungle Pop EP was released on December 20. (iTunes)

sunday girl1 Sunday Girl Releases Stunning Cover of The Pixies Where Is My Mind?

Ridiculously underrated UK songstress Sunday Girl (née Jade Williams) has been quietly pumping out some of the most scrumptiously lush electro-pop tunes for the past two years, including “Four Floors,” “Stop Hey,” and most recently, her shimmering cover of Sunscreem‘s “Love U More.”

Most recently, the singer recorded a cover of The Pixies‘ “Where Is My Mind?” which is now being used in a popular advertising campaign for UK vacation company, Thomson.

Much like Ellie Goulding‘s gorgeous cover of Elton John‘s “Your Song” released in time for Christmas last year, “Where Is My Mind?” finds the usually electro-pop minded songstress delivering a wonderfully stripped-back production, crooning sweetly above a soft piano melody and a lush string section. SO beautiful!

“Where Is My Mind?” has gained substantial buzz over the past few weeks because of its inclusion in the Thomson holiday ads–so much so, in fact, that the song’s just been added to iTunes UK by Island Records (plus a music video to boot!)

With any luck, this will be the song to boost Sunday Girl’s profile enough to get that debut album off the ground in 2012. Lord knows, she deserves it. Fingers crossed!

Looks like Michelle Williams isn’t the only one channeling Marilyn Monroe lately.

Just as My Week with Marilyn hits theaters across the country, it seems Mizz Jessie + The Toy Boys has been doing her own reflecting on the iconic bombshell’s untimely demise–electro-pop style.

“Marilyn” is one of Jessie’s more serious-faced offerings, putting a brief hold on the sexy talk of her past few singles (no “All my hos, touch ya toes!” calls to action here) in order to wax philosophical on the bouncing mid-tempo.

“Marilyn, why’d you die young?/Were you running?/Were the rumors true?” the “Push It” princess ponders above the big, bubbly ’80′s electro-pop beats (and a bit of harpsichord for good measure).

Earlier this year, the mannequin-minded mistress released the Show Me Your Tan Lies EP, as well as her latest single “Let’s Get Naughty” in October–all tiny teases before Jessie finally pops in 2012 with her highly anticipated debut LP, This Is How Rumors Start.

“Let’s Get Naughty” was released on October 25. (iTunes)
