It’s been a long time coming (and something that’ll make my K-pop Krazy friend Prophet Blog wet himself with delight), but it’s time I finally acknowledged the wonder and splendor of the force known as Girls’ Generation.
Now, I myself am more of a J-Pop connoisseur than K-Pop girl group guru (I go hard for Utada Hikaru, Namie Amuro, Koda Kumi and Ayumi Hamasaki in particular), but it’s all but impossible not to notice the extraordinary influence of Korean girl groups making their way overseas.
Girls’ Generation–sometimes referred to as SNSD (an acronym based on their Korean name)–is by far one of South Korea’s most popular acts. After their debut back in 2007, the nonet (that’s nine members) has gone on to win countless awards and smash dozens of records in both Korea and Japan, most notably for their 2009 international smash hit “Gee,” the Ke$ha-penned “Run Devil Run,” as well as their #1 Japanese hit from earlier this year, “Mr. Taxi.”
(By the way: Think a nine member group is crazy? Check out AKB48, a J-Pop group consisting of 59 members to date. Go ahead. Just try and remember their names.)
Now, quite excitingly, Girls’ Generation are set to make their official mark stateside (well, worldwide really) with the release of their third studio album The Boys, due to hit iTunes on October 19, followed by a US single release via Interscope Records sometime in November.
“The Boys” is the album’s lead single, which was recorded in both Korean and English. Today, the full song hit iTunes and the video has premiered (in both languages) and…well, it’s absolutely incredible. (To be fair: J-Pop and K-Pop videos usually slay Western videos. This is certainly no exception.)
Featuring some truly ferocious choreography, the ladies work it out in some sort of icy snow palace while rocking sky-high stilettos and killer haute couture threads. For fans of girl groups of any kind, the video relentlessly delivers everything that a good girl group video should: Fierce poses, glamorous looks, glossy styling…it’s everything!
And as for the song itself? Crafted by Teddy Riley (Michael Jackson, Lady Gaga), “The Boys” is a solid modern R&B/dance-pop effort with some attitude–a welcome change from the all-too-grating sugary-sweet sound that K-Pop girl groups tend to churn out on the regular. The chorus is an instant ear-worm. Plus, for those easily offenced by a foreign tongue hitting their ears, their accents aren’t even that strong at all–a key factor in helping them to crossover to the West.
As an English debut, “The Boys” is a pretty massive introduction for the group. I’m incredibly excited to see what the international response is to Girls’ Generation–especially in America. Yay for global pop recognition!

Well, here’s a song that’s good.
Neon Hitch is the self-described gypsy type who’s been all the rage over the interwebz as of late as one of pop’s most intriguing up-and-coming chanteuses. (No, but really, she’s got quite the colorful background–she used to be in the circus as both a trapeze artist and a fire swinger for one thing.)
After inking a publishing gig with EMI and co-penning/singing back up for acts like Ke$ha (“Blah Blah Blah”) and 3OH!3 (“Follow Me Down”), Hitch was signed to Warner Bros. Records by fellow songwriter and former American Idol judge, Kara DioGuardi in 2010.
Today, the singer just premiered her soon-to-be debut single on ArjanWrites. Spoiler Alert: It’s fantastic.
Produced by Benny Blanco and co-penned by Sia, “Get Over U” is a twinkling, stomping sad disco melody filled with warm, lush synthesizers and dramatic strings. It’s incredibly hypnotic, romantic and hopelessly infectious–the type of stuff that we gag about over here at the MuuMuse. You know, like Kylie Minogue‘s “The One” or Namie Amuro‘s “Come.” In other words: I die.
Plus, the entire vocal melody absolutely screams Sia (in other words, “quality!”), especially during the chorus–so much so that it’s entirely possible she’s featured in the background vocals.
It’s essentially Robyn‘s “Dancing On My Own” for 2011, isn’t it?
According to a member of the PopJustice forums, this will be Neon Hitch’s debut single and a video has already been shot.
No clue on how the world will take to this one just yet, but I’m officially pumped.

Mya‘s back!
Much like every other act this side of the ’10′s, Mya’s gone and shed her R&B roots in favor of a good ol’ synth machine to assist in her dance-inspired return to the music scene–perhaps inspired by her recent stint on the ninth season of Dancing With The Stars. Well…that, or she’s gone and listened to Pop radio for, like, fifteen minutes to see what the kids are listening to these days.
To my giddy delight, the singer will attempt to break two major territories at the same time: America and…Japan! Eee! DID SOMEONE SAY J-POP? ^.^ (Oh God. I’m sorry for that.)
After the release of her first Japanese album in 2008 (Sugar & Spice), Mya is now continuing to pursue a Japanese recording career with “Fabulous Life,” released on January 19 on iTunes Japan.
As The Prophet Blog reported, the song was co-produced by Jeff Miyahara, producer of such gems as AI‘s “Fake (feat. Namie Amuro)” and Crystal Kay‘s “One.” It was also co-produced by Fredro, the Swedish producer responsible for one of my favorite tracks from Jessica Mauboy‘s latest album.
“Fabulous Life” is genuinely adorable–a clearly J-Pop inspired, glittery little electro-pop ditty. It’s like Britney‘s “Anticipating”! Except more Japanese and stuff. I LOVE to bits and pieces!
If it were warmer ’round these parts, you know I’d be blasting this jam with the windows down while I was driving around town. For now, I guess I’ll just listen to it while I’m shoveling.
The second single in question–the Cedric Gervais-produced “Love Is The Answer”–is Mya’s offering for the North American territories.
A bit RuPaul, a dash of Donna Summer circa 2008 (Crayons, y’all!), Mya’s other offering blares into the speakers with an onslaught of ravey, hi-octane synthesizers a la Madonna‘s “Celebration.” “Love is the answer to all your problems,” the singer sweetly croons atop the hectic chorus. It’s no “My Love Is Like…Wo,” and certainly no “Case of the Ex,” but it’ll do for now.

According to the E! article, Mya is currently working on both her seventh and eighth studio albums. We here at MuuMuse can’t wait to hear ‘em–especially that J-Pop record. Sock it to me!

Once again, Namie Amuro has returned to the electro-tinged hip-hop side of life. Judging from this small sample, “Break It” is already better than most of Past < Future.
Fierce choreography, infectious pulsations…can’t we start from scratch and build a new album with all three 60s70s80s tracks (“Rock Steady,” “New Look,” and “WHAT A FEELING”) plus this and “WILD”?
THAT is the Namie I know and love.
…is that it’s ironically titled.
Past < Future is certainly not Namie Amuro‘s best work. After trying three times, I have absolutely no desire to revisit the album, aside from “WILD,” and perhaps “Dr.” and “Love Game.” Otherwise, nothing sticks.
It’s all a bit noisy, boring, and generic…all at the same time.
Sorry, Namie…try as I might, it’s not working for me in the slightest.
New Namie Amuro!
But before you get too excited, no–this is not a Lady Gaga cover.
In fact, before you get excited at all, the song’s actually not very good either.
I love me some Namie like no one’s business, but is anyone else a bit concerned about the Past < Future campaign as of late? None of the songs have actually won me over aside from “WILD.” Where’s all the hip-pop at, Amuro?
To be fair, the video is gorgeous. But still…
Behold: Namie Amuro, the reigning queen of J-Pop, has just unveiled the CD and DVD covers of her ninth upcoming studio album, PAST < FUTURE.
In case you can’t tell and/or aren’t a fan, she’s ripping up the cover of BEST FICTION, her million-selling greatest hits collection from 2008, thus producing two of the greatest album covers of 2009.
I can’t wait until December 16!
