Kate Havnevik Delivers “Mouth 2 Mouth” (Single Review)

STOP EVERYTHING IN YOUR FUCKING LIFE BECAUSE THIS IS THE ONLY FUCKING SONG THAT MATTERS TODAY.
David Guetta – “Titanium (feat. Sia)”
So it’s a fight you want? Well, as Jordin Sparks would likely say: YABETTAGOANDGETCHURAMMA.
Powerhouse Aussie-born soulstress Sia comes guns blazing in “Titanium,” the final track off of David Guetta‘s forthcoming record Nothing But The Beat, which is due out on August 30 in the US.
“Titanium” is a blend of many amazing elements–from the delicate guitar-strummed verses of Rogue Traders “In Love Again” to the explosive, crashing choruses of every song featured on Kelis‘ 2010 electro-masterpiece, Flesh Tone.
While our society has come to abuse this word, there’s really only one way to properly describe the song: Epic.
From the very first second, “Titanium” teems with an anxious anticipation of what’s to come. Yet even by the time the song’s chorus does rolls around, you still won’t be ready: “Shoot me down, but I won’t fall / I am titanium!” Sia triumphantly declares, and then it happens: The beat drops, giving way to a gasp-worthy, pearl-clutching orgy of stadium-sized synthesizers and filthy, grinding electronica.
Lyrically speaking, the song contains all the reinforcement of some of the major Top 40 self-empowerment anthems floating around as the ditties du jour in pop music today, as Sia stands strong (presumably against haters–still unconfirmed) directly within the line of fire: “I’m bulletproof, nothing to lose / Fire away, fire away / Ricochet, you take your aim / Fire away, fire away,” she boldly announces. For fans of Demi Lovato‘s similarly metal-minded “Skyscraper”, you’ll be pleased to know that Sia too is holding her ground as an impenetrable alloy–only further proving that the pop industry will soon be overrun by singing Japanese robots.
On the serious: “Titanium” is the best thing Guetta’s produced in ages (well, since Kelly Rowland‘s “Commander.”) While the frighteningly successful French DJ has become a dance floor staple for the latter half of the past decade, Guetta’s usually due to churn out something truly transcendent every year or so–”Titanium” is one of those moments.
Easily a favorite of the year.
“Titanium (feat. Sia)” will be released on August 8. (iTunes)
I’ll say it: I don’t get the Ladyhawke love.
To me, the Ladyhawke surge is akin to that of last year’s Rogue Traders wave of fascination, and to a lesser degree, the Dragonette spree (I hesitate to make that connection because I still actively believe in Dragonette.)
What I’m hearing is some strictly by-the-books rock chord changes and uninspired vocals and rhymes. Very safe, very ’90s pop-rock…I feel as though I’ve heard it all before! Granted, It’s not bad material, per se–I’m just not impressed, and I don’t believe she merits the onslaught of high praise that’s been dealt. So what’s the hub-bub about everyone?
Cool video, though.
“My Delirium” is due out December 8th.
I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again: Girls Aloud is the best five piece girl band out of the UK since the dawn of the new millenium, hands down. Spice will, of course, always be number one in my heart, but I will be damned if the Girls aren’t a bat of a false eyelash away from claiming the title of the fiercest fiver. They’re going on tour this summer which will inevitably crush my spirits, seeing as I live miles away (they always love me more that way), but I know I’ll get to see it via scream filled, shaky YouTube clips in the very near future.
Opening for the group must obviously be an impossible task, though bringing in the Rogue Traders last year was a wise choice. This time around, the Girls Aloud cronies decided to go with The Saturdays, a brand new five-piece girl group that features two former members of S Club 8–I’ll let you marinate on that tidbit. PopJustice introduced them a while ago to remind everyone that their single would drop in May. If you sniff around long enough, you’ll find it in the download sections of your music forums.
The song, called “If This Is Love,” is certainly better than decent, and includes a souped up 80′s sample, woman-filled singing, and rather big choruses–though it isn’t entirely fulfilling. In other words, the perfect opener to the grand show. I would have liked to post a picture of their pretty faces, but they don’t seem to exist on the Internet…which is slightly unsettling. Anyway, go find their single and give it a listen. You’ll be reminded of how much you really love their label sisters, the Aloud, in the first place.
…Oh Nadine, why don’t you call me?
Another find for the masses! It’s The Ting Tings, a proper indie electro-pop duo from the UK. The band, composed of Jules De Martino and Katie White, has been toting around the same single, “That’s Not My Name”, for a while now, though only now are they finally starting to get some deserved response. The sing
le will now be released on May 12th. An accompanying video premiered on the band’s Bebo site a little while ago, so I thought I’d introduce the song. It’s a little bit garage band, some trace amounts of Beach Boys-esque influence, and a whole lot of fun. I’m also getting a Rogue Traders vibe, which means a lot of faux-rock style and glammish rebellion. Right now, you can go here to pre-order the single and snag a signed poster. Or you can listen to the song in shit quality I posted below. The choice is yours!
And for anyone interested in their other single, “Great DJ”, you can find the original video here. Sorry, it’s un-embeddable because it’s official, and therefore cooler than this site.
