Sounds like: The Presets, Cut Copy, Empire of the Sun
Genre: Synth-pop, dance-pop, electronica
After my post about Jodie Aysha, I was reminded of another act that my buddy JJS of It’s The Money Shot! breathlessly told me about months ago. I’ve waited for far too long to do this Introduucing piece, but the time has finally come!
Garçon Garçon (adorable name!) are Nathan Mahon and Nick Tsirimokos, a synth-pop male duo (gorgeous men!) hailing from Sydney, the land where all good synth-pop acts are born (please see Cut Copy, Sneaky Sound System, Empire Of The Sun, et al.)
While there’s not too much information about these sexy specimens quite yet aside from this extremely likable video introduction, Garçon Garçon have released two demos available for download on their Facebook page thus far: “Take Me Out” and “Maybe Tonight.”
Both songs are smartly crafted electro-pop concoctions, teeming with ’80′s-inspired synthesizers and romantic, forlorn vocals. Very New Wave, very accessible, and very, very catchy.
I’m especially obsessed with “Maybe Tonight”: “Maybe he’ll be out there tonight, maybe he’ll be somewhere tonight / But if I had a love, he’d never go away from me,” Nathan sings sweetly above a cool stream of dreamy synthesizers and 8-bit electronica. Oh, how my heart melts!
I suggest you snatch both of these up immediately.
While we wait to hear more, Manhunt Daily posted an in-depth interview with Garçon Garçon recently, outlining their musical interests and influences (Nick listens to LCD Soundsystem and M.I.A.! Nathan listens to The Knife and Sigur Ros!), their thoughts on being out in the music industry, and what we can expect to hear from their upcoming EP.
It’s a must read!
Garçon Garçon’s debut EP, entitled EP, will be released Summer 2011.
God, I love this group.
Today marks the official release of the Sneaky Sound System‘s fourth (and final?) single, “It’s Not My Problem.” The song is but one of the many terrific tracks off of Sneaky’s 2008 album 2, a devastatingly overlooked (referring to America, obviously) collection of dance-pop gems a la Cut Copy and The Presets.
Be sure to watch the video above, created by fan competition winner, Maik Hempel. It’s fun, it’s adorable…and even more impressively, it’s fan-made!
Poor little cartoon man…he’s like the friend that Moby‘s Little Idiot never had.

And finally, I’d like to wish all the mommas out there a wonderful Mother’s Day. I love you, Mom!
It’s been four days, and I’m still trying to come down from the high that The Presets produced during their smashing set at the Paradise Rock Club in Boston on Tuesday. Seriously, they were fuh-nomonal. To my great excitement and confusion, I stumbled across a Presets track floating around that I haven’t already managed to wrap my headphones around. Oh, what I’ve been missing!
It’s both a U.K. bonus album track and the B-side to their amazing single “This Boy’s In Love,” called “Buzz Factory.” The song truly takes only a few moments to become absolutely epic. It takes off from the get-go: From rough, gritty amateurish electro stabs and stutterings, it morphes into shades of early ’90′s club and gradually evolves into some very modern, very haunting trance. After three minutes, I was perfectly content to consider this song an incredible instrumental, so it was to my great surprise that Julian’s vocals suddenly come floating in at the 3:30 mark, reminiscient of something off of Royksopp‘s The Understanding. Unearthly and transient, the song transports to another level in the last few minutes of lavishing synth…It’s wonderfully essential. This is one of those few songs that manages to encapsulate everything that I love about electronic music. Now that is truly saying something.
Special thanks to super-correspondent Michael for the pictures from our concert!
I’m off to see Cut Copy and The Presets live in Boston right now, so keep your eyes peeled here for LIVE updates (tweets!) while the show’s going on! Technology!
CONCLUSION:
Concert: Amazing
Mind: Spinning
Body: Aching
Sleep: Now.

In a word, haunting. Instilling unconventional vocals along with distorted ’80′s power synth sounds, Zeigeist just may be the new “it” group to lead their proudly pop-happy country to the top of the pop charts yet again. Chock full of unforgettable riffs and crisp electro noises from the year 2010, the band’s album The Jade Machine is one long breath of Swedish electro bliss. Though many of the songs featured are undeniably similar to the output of fellow Swedes The Knife (“Dawn Night” is essentially “We Share Our Mother’s Health”), the album retains an originality of its own within its more mainstream, digestable pop-electro sound. Sure, that’s not always a better thing, but it certainly works for them.
There’s even a hint of Goldfrapp hidden beneath the fragmented synthesizer, especially within “The Lake.” “Wrecked Metal” might as well have come directly from the Depeche Mode back catalog, bouncing along with the original synth-band’s familiar air of hopelessness, darkness, and pure sex. “Cuffs” is uncomfortably similar to Kelly Osbourne‘s genius pop-noir hit, “One Word,” but I’ll consider it a posthumous nod to the original. (No, she’s not dead, but that career sure is.) I’m even getting some waves of The Presets every now and then while listening. This is an incredibly promising, incredibly exciting release, and I highly encourage you to check out their MySpace now and order the album. Make sure you check out their pictures as well. I don’t know if they’re promotional or actual lives, but the visuals of their performances seem epic.
It’s quite difficult to track down a proper live, so enjoy this thirty second clip. I’ve no idea what’s happening here (there looks to be some triangle lights, a giant dancing space creature, and Liza Minelli) but it appears they make for a rather good show.
I spoke about The Presets‘ new single “This Boy’s In Love” yesterday. Now, I speak of “Talk Like That”, an album track off of their stellar upcoming release Apocalypso. The song features an incredibly stutter chorus “ta-ta-ta-talk like that” that goes beyond the realm of addictive, Transylvania friendly organ flurries, and the incorporation of the phrase “tough titties.” Sold yet? Thought so.
