Utada Hikaru, Soundtrack Queen, to Release Theme Song ‘Anata’ in December

This winter, the Exodus icon returns with her first movie theme since her sweeping masterpiece “Sakura Nagashi” for 2012’s Evangelion: 3.0 You Can (Not Redo). (The track was later featured on Fantome.)

“Anata” (“You”) will serve as the theme song for Takashi Yamazaki‘s DESTINY Kamakura Monogatari (Destiny: Kamakura Story), a fantasy movie that looks…incredibly bizarre. And magical, of course.

According to AramaJapan, Yamazaki asked Utada if she would do the song, which she gladly accepted. She wrote the track in London this past summer, which apparently explores “Buddhist themes” present in the film.

The track is, annoyingly, not out until December 8 (the day before the movie hits), but at the very least, we’ve got a little taste of the piano-led song in the film’s trailer — plus the gorgeous single artwork.

Here’s hoping an album soon follows.

“Anata” will be released on December 8.
